Starbucks Sizes: Cup Sizes in Ounces and Espresso Shots

Cups run from a 3 ounce Demi to a 30 ounce Trenta, but the board shows only Tall, Grande and Venti. A hot Venti is 20 ounces and an iced Venti is 24. Shots rise with size too. The chart below lists ounces, milliliters and shots for every cup.

Demi 3 ozSmallest
Grande 16 ozCommon
Venti 20 ozLargest hot
Trenta 30 ozLargest iced
Caramel Protein Latte

Starbucks sells drinks in up to seven cup sizes, from a 3 ounce Demi to a 30 ounce Trenta. Most people only ever see three of them on the menu board: Tall, Grande and Venti.

This page lists every cup in ounces and milliliters, shows how many espresso shots each one gets, and explains which drinks can be ordered in which size. If you came for the basics on hot cups, the quick rule is that Starbucks coffee sizes run from 8 ounces up to 20, while cold cups go bigger. Starbucks Sizes and Prices at a Glance

Tall is the smallest size on the menu board, Grande is the usual order, and the Venti is the biggest hot cup. The Trenta is the biggest cup of all, but only a short list of iced drinks comes in it.

  • Smallest: Demi, 3 oz, espresso only
  • Most common: Grande, 16 oz
  • Largest hot: Venti, 20 oz
  • Largest iced: Trenta, 30 oz

Here is the starbucks size chart with ounces, milliliters and the shots a latte gets.

Price rises with every step up in size, but the amount depends on your store, your city and the drink itself. A Frappuccino and a plain brewed coffee do not climb at the same rate. Delivery apps add their own markups, so the cheapest way to compare is to open your local store in the Starbucks app and switch sizes.

Short Tall Grande Venti and Trenta: What Each Size Means

The starbucks cup sizes use Italian-flavored names, so they do not line up with small, medium and large. Read them as a ladder: Short is 8 ounces, Tall is 12, Grande is 16, Venti is 20 or 24, and Trenta is 30.

Each step adds about 4 ounces for hot cups. Iced cups jump further because ice takes up room.

The names do not tell you shot counts either. A Tall and a Short both pour one shot in a latte, a Grande and a hot Venti both pour two, and only the iced Venti reaches three. That is why the chart above matters more than the label on the cup.

Demi and Short: The Smaller Cups

The Demi holds 3 ounces and is made for espresso, either a single or a double. Its name comes from the demitasse, a half-size coffee cup. Not every store stocks the cups, so availability varies.

The Short holds 8 ounces and is for hot drinks only. It is not printed on the menu board, but baristas still make it. It suits small milky drinks such as a cortado, and it is a good fit for kids who want a hot chocolate without a huge cup. Ask for it at the counter, since the app may not list it.

Tall Size at Starbucks: 12 Ounces

The Tall is 12 ounces, or 355 milliliters. It is the smallest size on the board, which surprises first-time customers who expect Tall to mean large. Tall used to sit in the middle of the Short, Tall and Grande ladder, and the name stayed even after the Short left the board.

A hot Tall latte gets one espresso shot. A brewed Tall Pike Place has about 235 milligrams of caffeine in published tables. If you want a lighter pour, or a drink you will finish before it cools, this is the size to pick. It also keeps sweet drinks in check, since syrup pumps fall with the cup.

Starbucks Grande How Many Oz: 16 Ounces Explained

A Grande is 16 ounces. In metric, a grande cup size is 473 milliliters. Grande is Italian for large, and it is the default for most orders.

Lattes in this size get two espresso shots. That is also true for the hot Venti, so many people find the Grande delivers the same caffeine in a smaller cup.

Starbucks Venti Price and Why Hot and Iced Venti Differ

A hot Venti is 20 ounces and an iced Venti is 24 ounces. The extra 4 ounces on the cold cup make room for ice, so an iced Venti holds roughly the same amount of drink as a hot one once the ice settles. The shots change too: a hot Venti latte has two shots, while an iced Venti latte gets three.

The third shot is the main reason an iced Venti latte tastes stronger than a hot Venti latte, even though both share a name. How much more a Venti costs than a Grande varies by drink and store, so no single dollar figure holds everywhere. For current menu costs, see the menu prices by drink.

Starbucks Trenta Cup: 30 Ounces for Select Iced Drinks

The Trenta is 30 ounces, or 887 milliliters, and it is cold only. Published lists include iced coffee, cold brew, iced tea and Refreshers. Lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos, hot drinks and Frappuccinos do not come in it.

A Trenta cold brew carries about 360 milligrams of caffeine in published figures, close to five espresso shots. Stores can run out of the cups, so check the app. More cold options are on the iced coffee and cold brew page.

Starbucks Drink Sizes by Drink Type

Not every drink comes in every cup, so this table shows the sizes of starbucks drinks by category. Seasonal and limited drinks can have fewer choices, and stores can differ. For every item, see every drink on the menu.

Starbucks Frappuccino Sizes: Tall, Grande and Venti

Frappuccinos come in three cups: Tall at 12 ounces, Grande at 16 and Venti at 24. There is no Short and no Trenta, so a Tall is the smallest blended cup you can order. Blended drinks are thick and sweet, which is why many people stay at Tall or Grande.

Stores also sell bottled Frappuccinos in grocery aisles. Those come in 9.5 ounce and 13.7 ounce bottles, which are smaller than a Grande. See all the Frappuccino flavors for the blended lineup.

Hot Coffee, Espresso and Tea Sizes

Hot cups start at Short and end at Venti. Nothing hot goes above 20 ounces. Shots do not rise at every step, since a Grande and a hot Venti both pour two shots in a latte. If you want more kick in a Venti, add a shot. Hot tea follows the same ladder, so a Venti simply holds more water than a Short.

Iced Coffee, Refreshers and Cold Brew Sizes

Cold cups run from Tall to Trenta, and they are larger because ice fills part of the cup. Expect less liquid than the number suggests, so ask for light ice if you want more drink and less chill. Cold brew and iced coffee are the usual reasons people reach for the biggest cup, since they are refreshing and easy to sip slowly. Refreshers follow the same cold ladder, and the Refreshers lineup shows which flavors come in the biggest cup.

Espresso Shots and Caffeine by Cup Size

Size options at starbucks change the shot count, but not always in step with ounces. The numbers below are commonly published defaults, and a barista can change them.

A single espresso shot has about 75 milligrams of caffeine, and a double has about 150. Brewed coffee and cold brew are listed in milligrams per cup rather than per shot. Real cups can vary from batch to batch, so use these as a guide. For the full drink-by-drink breakdown, use the calories and nutrition by size page.

Different Sizes at Starbucks and Which One Gives the Best Value

Pick by goal, not by name. Value depends on what you actually drink, and the price per ounce is only part of it. A cup that is mostly ice gives you less coffee than the label suggests.

  • Grande is the default for a reason: two shots and a comfortable cup.
  • Hot Venti gives more liquid with the same two shots, so it is better for a slow sip than for extra caffeine.
  • Iced Venti adds a third shot, but ice fills much of the cup, so the drink is not as big as 24 ounces sounds.
  • Short is a smaller, cheaper treat for dessert drinks.
  • Trenta suits iced coffee drinkers who refill rarely.

If you want caffeine without a jump in cup size, add a shot to a smaller drink instead.

Ordering Tips: Size Swaps, Customization and Non-Menu Sizes

To get a Short or Demi, ask for it by name at the counter. The app may not show them, and a Demi is only for espresso. Say "a short latte" or "a double in a demi cup." Kids drinks and small hot chocolates are the most common reasons people ask for a Short, and the smaller cup usually costs a little less than a Tall.

You can add shots without changing the cup. Say "Grande latte with an extra shot." Syrup pumps also rise with size. Commonly published defaults are 2 pumps in a Short, 3 in a Tall, 4 in a Grande, 5 in a hot Venti and 6 in an iced Venti, though some recipes differ. Ask for fewer pumps if you want less sweetness.

Sizes also change what a customization costs. A larger cup takes more pumps of syrup and more milk, so an extra flavor shot in a Venti adds more sweetness and more calories than the same change in a Tall. If sweetness is the problem, drop a pump or two instead of dropping a size.

Avoid hacks you cannot confirm in the app. If the screen does not offer a size, the store may not carry it.

Cup Size Questions People Ask

What are all the cup sizes in order?

From smallest to largest they are Demi at 3 ounces, Short at 8, Tall at 12, Grande at 16, Venti at 20 hot or 24 iced, and Trenta at 30. Most menu boards show only Tall, Grande and Venti, while Short and Demi are off the board.

How many ounces is a grande at Starbucks?

A Grande is 16 fluid ounces, which equals about 473 milliliters. It is the middle size on the board and the usual default order. Hot and iced Grandes are the same size, though ice takes up part of the cold cup.

How many ounces is a venti hot versus iced?

A hot Venti is 20 ounces, or about 591 milliliters, while an iced Venti is 24 ounces, or about 710 milliliters. The cold cup is bigger to make room for ice. It also gets an extra espresso shot in lattes.

What is the biggest size at Starbucks?

The biggest is the Trenta at 30 ounces, or 887 milliliters. It is only for select cold drinks such as iced coffee, cold brew, iced tea and Refreshers. For hot drinks and lattes, the Venti at 20 ounces is the biggest.

What size is the Trenta and which drinks come in it?

The Trenta is 30 ounces. Published lists include iced coffee, cold brew, iced tea and Refreshers. Lattes, hot drinks and Frappuccinos are not offered in it. Because stock can vary, check the drink screen in the app.

Is Tall really the smallest size at Starbucks?

On the menu board, yes. Tall is 12 ounces, and the Short and Demi are not printed there. The Short at 8 ounces is available for hot drinks, and the Demi at 3 ounces is for espresso, but you usually have to ask for them.

How many espresso shots are in a tall, grande and venti latte?

A hot Tall latte has one shot, a hot Grande has two and a hot Venti has two. An iced Venti latte has three. Americanos run higher, at two shots in a Tall, three in a Grande and four in a Venti.

What are the Frappuccino sizes at Starbucks?

Frappuccinos come in Tall at 12 ounces, Grande at 16 ounces and Venti at 24 ounces. There is no Short or Trenta. Bottled Frappuccinos in stores come in 9.5 ounce and 13.7 ounce sizes.

How much more does a venti cost than a grande?

It depends on the drink, the store and the city, so no single amount is right. A Venti costs more than a Grande, and the gap tends to be smaller than the jump from Tall to Grande. Check your local store in the app.

Can I order a Short or Demi if it is not on the menu board?

Usually yes. Ask the barista for a Short on a hot drink or a Demi for espresso. Some stores do not stock Demi cups, and the app may not offer either size. Order at the counter if the screen does not show them, and be ready to name the drink and the size clearly.
